Recent films about splitboarding including Jeremy Jones’ ‘Deeper’ & his forthcoming release ‘Further’ has kindled a growing interest in the sport and in the rewards splitboard courses offer to those who aren’t afraid to get out and explore what lies beyond the piste.
Splitboarding is akin to ski touring whereby the board breaks down into two ‘skis’ which, with the aid of ‘skins’ on the bottom to prevent slip, can be used to walk through snow easily. This enables the user to set off and reach areas that aren’t accessed via the ski lifts. At the top the board quickly reassembles and rides like a normal snowboard.
For many snowboarders getting the chance to ride in fresh powder is the ultimate goal whilst away on their winter holidays. However, (assuming it snows on your holiday) with resorts worldwide growing ever busier each year it is becoming more difficult to find the elusive goods ‘in-bounds’ and if you do chances are it will be tracked out by noon!
The Rider Social in Chatel a part of the massive internationally linked Portes Du Soleil ski domain are offering snowboarders the chance to get away from the busy lift queue’s and crowded piste’s and find that powder on their Spring 2013 splitboard course running from 16th – 23rd March in association with Never Summer Industries.
Never Summer having been producing high end, hand built snowboards out of their Denver Colorado based workshops since 1991 and have a growing reputation in the UK as a premium quality brand. The Rider Social have been working with them for the past 4 years and have of a range of their 2013 splitboards for use on the course.
The course itself will be led by Rory Burton a fully BASI qualified resident of Chatel. He has been teaching snowboarding for the past 15 years in Chatel and knows its backcountry like the back of his Gore-Tex glove. He will be on hand to offer tuition (to those who need or would like it) throughout the duration of the course.
Not only will they be offering backcountry technique lessons as a part of the price but will also provide training in how to use our Ortovox avalanche transceivers along with lessons in mountain safety and snowpack awareness.
The last two days of this course will be led by the UIAGM high mountain guide, Jean Yves Fredriksen. Jean Yves will take the group to wherever the snow is best those days be that in France or Switzerland. This will undoubtedly be an epic climax to the week and will show the participants snowboarding that they will remember for the rest of their lives.
So whether you are a seasoned snowboarder looking for the best snow and riding the area has to offer or an intermediate who would like to learn how to snowboard off-piste this course, the first ever in this popular resort, will cover it.
The price also includes 7 nights catered stay at chalet ‘Le Cret’, return transfers to Geneva, use of Never Summer splitboards and Ortovox safety equipment. Snowboard tuition is all throughout the week too – a bargain at only 995 pounds per person!!
